Washington Trails Association - Trail Work Party!

So I went on my first trail building hike with the Washington Trails Association. It was a BLAST. I got there before anyone else... 745am on a Saturday... in the middle of the forest. How Fun!

Taylor Mountain is just south of Cougar and Tiger Mountains... south past Issaquah and into Hobart. What a beautiful area! I'd never been there before, and will definitley be back.

For the WTA hikes, you get to wear a helmet! After you volunteer on five hikes... you get your OWN helmet with your name on it! (and you know I'll be doing that!)
There were two WTA volunteers on the hike along with Jack (who I'm hugging at the end of the hike).
Jack is an employee of the King Co. Parks and Rec. His job is to go thru the forest and mark new trails - he also went with us (brought a chain saw) to cut down the large branches and brush that we couldn't get at with our shovels and tools. It was a really fun experience, and I'm sure you'll see more pics in the future!
Also - get ready... I'm starting a new course in a few weeks... ROCK CLIMBING! :)

April showers bring new Mountaineer Adventures!
Sunday I went on my second big adventure hiking with the Mountaineers. I went on three hikes totaling 8.5 miles all around Deception Pass... I had a great time!
This is the first hike... all the same group went on all the hikes (there were a total of 6 of us)
Here we're using our new compass/map reading skills to locate our position on the map.
Now using a technique called leap-froging (not as fun as the real leap-froging) Once we got to the top of the first "hill" on the first hike, I got my picture taken on the edge :) If you notice, I actually carry my compass around my neck... which makes for an odd square under my shirt... (I ended up moving it to my pants pocket)

As you know... I'm always only one step away from taking pictures of myself...
We then headed down for our second hike... down along the west beach of Deception Pass
.

After that was lunch and some quizzes on bearings, triangulations and contour lines. The third hike was on the north side on the bridge out to LightHouse Point.
Once around the side - there were amazing views. There was old growth trees and I even got to stand in one!
By the end of the hikes... I was a little pooped...
but I couldn't resist NOT driving down Whidbey Island!

Going to Whidbey means one more thing...
The Good 'Ol Washington State Ferry System!

That's what I like to do!
